Aluvihara rock cave temple is situated in Matale district. It is 40 Km away from “Naturee Riverstone River Cottage”. If someone plans to come to Riverstone via Kandy> Matale>Rattota road, Aluvihara temple is just 2km away from the Matale-Riverstone route.  This temple has a great historic importance. Aluvihara is  considered as the place that  Tripitaka ( Buddhist doctrines)  was documented on palm-leaves by priests in 3rd century AD .Venerable Buddhagosa spent several years in this cave documenting the doctrines of the Buddha This temple is consisted  caves with frescoes and Buddha Statues  that shows talents  of  Archeologists .

There are many legends associated' How Aluvihara(Luminous Cave)  received its name. This temple is originally called as Aloka cave. This temple faced east and It is received morning ray of the sun therefore this temple is called as Aloka cave (lighting Cave).
